We write posts about apps and posts about the iPhone etc, and sometimes it’s hard to work out what to write about, and yes sometimes a pattern forms – turns out we’ve been talking about a few games lately. Israel commented on our SimCity post that mainly his phone is full of utilities.
It got me thinking, I have a heap of utilities on my iPhone and I thought I’d share a few with you.
- Delivery Status Touch
- If your business sends and receives a lot of packages then this is a must have app for your. Supporting a huge list of delivery companies (from FedEx to Japan Post and more) this app can also track online orders, giving you up to the minute details about your item – even plotting them on the map
- Percent Calculator
- I hate to admit it, but math is not my strong point. This app can quickly help you to figure out any percentage calculation you may need – now how much is an iPhone if it has 27% off?
- Air Mouse
- I am often called on to do a presentation of something to some people, and I’m frustrated that the Apple Remote App is (I think) utter crap, it should support Keynote. Air Mouse allows me to drive my Mac from the front of the room over WiFi – and it’s a real mouse so I can do more than just advance slides. It’s not cheap but if you need to control your Mac from a distance it’s the best.
- Things
- I’ve talked about Things before and probably will again. I’m a huge fan of Things from Cultured Code (including Things for Mac as well as this iPhone/iPod Touch version) as I can set up all my projects, my tasks and other must do things and sync over WiFi between the Mac and the iPhone. With a fantastic interface it is such an easy app to use to manage your daily tasks.
- Record Voice Recorder
- When I do have to present I hate having to think about writing my talk. So instead I turn on Record and walk around my basement (or drive in the car) and just talk. Record is brilliant and it even is location aware – it knows that recordings done at work are different to those done at home. With the small sink (yes, they call it “sink”) tool, you can copy your recordings to your Mac (or PC) over WiFi.
So there you go, five utilities you can’t do without for your iPhone or iPod Touch. I’m sure there are many more. What are the five must have on your iTouch or iPhone?
Great post! These are utilities I have yet to stumble upon but plan to check them out today.
As for what I have on my iphone:
· Urbanspoon
(I like to mix up what I eat)
(we have a lot of earthquakes in California)
(always cool to see who is coming from where)
(you never know when you need to quickly sum up ohms)
(Pro
) (I do a lot of ssh from my iphone)
(I sometimes need to decode things quickly)
(usually testing connections to different machines)
(networking fun)
(I have thousands of machines I connect to in a pinch)
(I use it a few times a day)
(probably the most expensive app on my phone that I paid for that is well worth it)
(it’s always handy to have a loud dtmf tool – no redbox feature
)
(everyone needs to have a flashlight)
· Epicentral
· Zipcodes
· ResistorCode
· TouchTerm
· ascii2bin
· Ping
· subnetCalc
· VNC
· RDP
· WinAdmin
· TeleTone
· MyLite
… then the standard social networking apps, barcode readers… I’m still waiting for the Keeper app
to be updated in a more secure fashion but they personally said they’d make it more secure soon. I have a few more utils but I’m still testing them when I get the time. I use my iphone for both business and pleasure and it has yet to disappoint.
wow, what an awesome list – how many “home” screens do you have?
I hope you don’t mind, I made your comment more of a list of apps & added the URL’s
Thanks heaps for the input – awesome to see. I also use VNC, but am looking for VNC Server for the iPhone not just a client
I currently have 2 and a half home screens. This site has been very informative for me and glad I could share some input.
When I get my hands on a mac I’ll be sure to try and write up some apps that I also need but haven’t seen out there yet. I’m always keeping my eye out to make my life easier. I come from a PC world but I’m enjoying the transition thus far.
