Must-Have Christmas Apps

Christmas is only 77 days away, can you believe it? As usual, the year has flown by and we’re approaching the Christmas season again.

Have you thought of adding a little festive cheer to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad? What about a useful Christmas app to help you remember everything? Here is the official iTalk Magazine Must-Have Christmas App List for 2010:

Christmas Countdown (iPhone/iPod Touch) and Christmas Countdown HD (iPad) will show impatient children how many nights, hours, or even seconds until Christmas. Also works for impatient adults!
Sleeps To Christmas (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) is a similar application, and also allows you to broadcast your joy via Facebook or Twitter. They have an advertisement-supported Sleeps To Christmas Lite version for free too!
Nice List (iPhone/iPod Touch) – For making a list and checking it twice. This gift manager app will help you to make sure you’ve got something for everybody, as well as helping you stick to your Christmas budget. For iPad users, Gifts HD is a do-everything gift manager app that even helps you find the lowest prices on the net!
Fuzzle Christmas – fun and free Christmas puzzle game. This is a Christmas-themed version of the great Fuzzle game.
Try the Christmas Tree Decorator (iPhone/iPod Touch) for some fun “practice” before you have to do the actual tree. Try dropping an ornament and see what happens!
The Holiday Snow Globe (iPhone/iPod Touch) might not really be much like the real thing, but it’s fun nonetheless!
In the area of Christmas book applications, the old favourites are still winners for me. At the top of my list are How The Grinch Stole Christmas (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) and The Night Before Christmas (iPad), both with graphics and audio, and A Christmas Carol (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) a professionally narrated audio version of Charles Dickens’ perennial book – remember Scrooge?
Are The Wiggles popular with the kids at your house? We recommend the Wiggly Wiggly Christmas album for children of all ages. Their catchy songs will have you humming some new Christmas tunes in no time!

This is our list, we’ve checked it … well, only once actually – we are too busy playing our favourite games. What about you? Tell us what apps you recommend for Christmas in our comments and we’ll update the list with your additions!

I just downloaded CubeCheater and let me tell you after watching the video I had my doubts

How could an iPhone app, help me solve the Rubiks Cube?

I, like I’m sure many people, have a box of Rubiks cubes that I play with now and then and every now and then I catch a glimmer of hope after trying a bunch of other solutions, including reading through page after page of instructions only to be disappointed. Not so with CubeCheater!

CubeCheater - the easy way to solve 3x3 Rubiks Cubes!

After downloading it from iTunes, the first thing you need to do is take photos of the 6 sides of your Rubiks Cube. The app will assist you as you take these shots, using the center square as the guide.

Once all sides are photographed. CubeCheater checks to make sure you don’t have more colors than others; if you do the app will give you a chance to eyeball, checking to see if the recognition failed and easily fix it by choosing a color on the palette and coloring a square the right color.

CubeCheater then sets about finding you a solution. There is a neat animation of a spinning cube to watch while it’s working it out. It doesn’t take long, just a few seconds and it’s done. My first one failed because I didn’t pay attention to which color was up in correlation to the facing color – doh! After my second attempt I figured it out and followed the 21 directions step by step and solved it in real life! It was really exciting to see how quickly CubeCheater can help you solve a Rubiks Cube without having to peel off the stickers or pry the squares apart (admit it – you’ve done it).

Aside from the standard features you can customize the color sets as well as the speed to where you follow to solve the cube. I found the default speed fine and only took a few seconds to adapt to to see the orientation for my Rubiks Cube and how to spin the cube.

Summary

This is certainly a fine App to have handy for parties as well as helping yourself learn how to solve a cube without having to rely on the CubeCheater.

This is one of those apps that really has no point, but it made me laugh and for that alone it gets a post. As you age, apparently you lose the ability to hear hear high frequencies. Some enterprising students took advantage of this and used ring tones on their mobiles that they could hear but their teachers could not. This has now been turned on its head with an application specifically designed to annoy kids with sounds that they can hear but you can’t.

To use Teen Torture all you do is fire it up and selected which age group you want to annoy, and you are ready to go.

I’m not to sure how well this app will do as most of the users of the iPhone are relatively young and would be affected by this app making it useless to them. But for $.99 there will be some older users will get some kicks from it, so next time you hear an annoying ringing in your ears it may just be “Teen Torture“.

Hot on the heels of the “iPhone Wind instrument” we have another brilliantly simple – yet utterly useless – iPhone Application. This one could be really handy with the kids.

Turn your iPhone into an iPhone Lie Detector. A very simple app that allows you to pretend to find out if someone you are talking to is telling the truth or not.

This one's a liar!

Set up the app by selecting if the user is Male or Female, enter their first name, age and hair colour (oh yeah this is really scientific). Finally enter the question you wish to test the person on. Hand them the phone and ask them to say Yes or No to the question.

This is a fun app, I went around and around asking people questions – got heaps of laughs.

iPhone Trumpet?

Who’d have thought it, your iPhone can become a trumpet (well, maybe a whistle, flute or similar). The guys from Smule have built a new app called Ocarina which is a great fun, cheap app to make music with.

With changing blips on the screen which are effectively your finger holes, you blow gently into your microphone and the application plays music. I don’t think we’ll see any in the symphony orchestra but it’s a great fun app to have. I could see kids getting a real kick out of this.

Why not grab Ocarina now for your iPhone or iPod Touch, or pick up Smule’s other instrument app, the Leaf Trombone.
