Okay, so Google haven’t come out yet with an iPhone App for Analytics but that hasn’t stopped someone else doing it.

Analytics App looks like a great solution, given that Analytics has a decent API this application promises to give you full access to your stats from anywhere.

Analytics App for iPhone

I’ve had a quick look threw some of the reviews and some folks say there are some teething issues with the app – but I’m sure those will be worked out very soon.

Our good mate over at WebHelp has grabbed a copy of this app & we’ll get him to write up a full review of the app after he’s put it through it’s paces. Rich @ Webhelp is a guru when it comes to Analytics, and he lives in there all day – so if it’s useful to him, it’ll be great for the rest of us.

At US$5.99, it’s not free – but then it’s not an official Google App and we do have to reward someone who puts this much effort into an app as powerful as this.

Check out the full screen shots & details at analyticsapp.com

Do you want to know where your (insert word here | friends | family | child | ex …. ) is at any given time? Google have announced Latitude which is now available for any mobile device that supports Google Maps.

I read this today on Engadget and thought, “sweet I’ll race off and try that”. The Google website tells me to punch in my number and they’ll send me a link. I do so.

I get a text message with a link, which I click and then I get this:

Seems this service isn’t quite ready – so I can’t even really tell you how it works. Any one in the US able to tell us how this goes?

There is a new kid on the block called Sound Grenade. Currently sound grenade is sitting in the top spot in iTunes free downloads. We thought it could get worse than Teen Tourte, but oh how wrong we were. iPhone Savior described it as “the most annoying, brain pummeling, face melting app on planet earth”, and we agree with that very accurate description

Sound Grenade App

According to the creators website:

Sound Grenade gives you instant crown control. That party get a little bit out of control? Sound Grenade is the answer. Plug your iPod touch or iPhone into some speakers and crank up the volume. Sound Grenade generates a really, really annoying, nauseating and headache producing high pitched sound.

Sound Grenade has some other interesting features such as being able to be set to motion activated alarm and a timer function, which according to the author “is great for stealth attacks”. We suggest if using the time stealth attack don’t leave your iPhone unmanned as it may be stomped on or thrown across the room by your unsuspecting victim

But there is another site to the story, Apple Insider managed to get an interview with the creator of Sound Grenade. As it turns out the 22 year old New Zealand based developer has worked on 20 something applications. Sound Grenade was made in under an hour as he had run out of ideas for new applications. Sound Grenade is now ad supported and is currently earning around $200 an hour – not bad for a fee app we think.

He also has interesting take on the App Store in his blog post i Wrote a top 10 app….and its shit:

The App Store is not like any other software market we’ve ever seen. If it could be compared to any other market, its like the Billboard Charts for Music. A good pop music producer can take someone with minimal talent, get them to sing some lyrics, and then run it through auto tune. Bam. Number one song. Thats all it takes with the App Store. Do some market research, work out that most of the people that download free apps are immature and seriously uncool (except you, dear reader, you aren’t like the rest of them*). Then, wrap an average idea that you think will appeal to immature and uncool people with some average graphics, and boom, top 10 app. Like the pop market, its hit and miss, sometimes it will work sometimes it wont.

None the less at least he is making some money out of his self confessed crap idea. Maybe we here at iTalk Magazine should develop and application. – Stay Tuned

Sound Grenade - Top App

You know what it’s like, you head out to the mall, drive round and round looking for a park. Some old lady backs out and you snatch the spot before someone else does. You walk the mall, buy some lunch and walk some more.

Then as you are leaving it hits you – oh crap, where’s the car?

Beacon is an iPhone app that allows you to “drop” a marker anywhere you like, and then use the app to locate that spot again.

Beacon has a radar style interface

Using a radar style interface, Beacon is beautiful in it’s simplicity even if the design is a bit gaudy. The radar is a little cliche and without a little Blip to show you the way is kind of pointless.

Beacon is a fantastic concept & the iPhone is the perfect device for this sort of application. The ability to find anything after placing a beacon there would be great.

Sadly this app is let down by poor GPS and location awareness the accuracy is (here in New Zealand at least) utter rubbish with even Google Maps having far better location proximity than this app. I don’t think the accuracy for this app ever got past POOR.

As a concept – it’s great, as a reality – not so.

Is your iPhone a bit nancy? Does it need a dose of toughen the heck up?

Well the new BulletFlight App from Knight Arm CO is the app for you. BulletFlight is a ballistics computer for high powered sniper rifles. This isnt one of those muck around applications its deadly serous. Knight Arm have even made a special mount so that the iPhone/iPod can be mounted directly onto the rifle.

iPhone/iPod Mounted on the Rifle

BulletFlight takes a whole lot of variables, such as wind speed, temperature distance, even the angle your of your gun via the accelerometer of the iPhone/iPod. After calculating all the variables the application tells you how to setup the scope to hit the target. BulletFlight gives accurate solutions up to 2000m (2km).

You can pick up bullet flight for $11.99 from the iTunes store, the sniper rifle on the other hand will cost much more.

I’m sorry to say this isn’t an application that iTalk Magazine will be reviewing in the future due to that fact we do not own a high powered sniper rifle. (ED: we don’t? Then what is in the case behind my desk?)

However there is no reason you cant get that app, and then just leave it open lying around the next time your friends come round and when they ask what it is just casually say “oh that’s just my sniper rifle ballistic calculator“.

Have you ever been driving around in your vehicle when “your” song starts plays on the radio that you love singing to? I haven’t but I’ve had plenty of friends that do. I always hold up a pretend microphone to their face so that they can sing their jam to the world… this usually quiets them down and gets a good laugh. So you can imagine the utter thrill I got when I heard that anyone can turn their iPhone into a pretty decent public address system – using Megaphone

Now I know what you are thinking… how loud can this baby really get? I’ll say that it got loud enough when testing the volume on a pair of DLO Portable Speakers for iPhone in my office that I saw the “gopher” effect happen throughout the cubicle farm. I then got too close to the speakers, resulting in that classic high pitched feedback that drives everyone nuts!

Folks started to line up to hear themselves talk through my iPhone and it was a pretty fun Friday afternoon break away from the grind.

After you install this app it takes you through a 35 second tour of how to use it and the features it offers; easily explained in these four slides.

You simply plug in your external amplified speakers, turn the iPhone upside down so that the microphone is facing up to bring up to your mouth and then talk/sing. The app is even themed to look like a big classic microphone and has a snazzy oscilloscope to show the sounds you are making and give positive feedback when it is ON.

This app is really simple for the user as it really only has two settings. ON and OFF. When started, Megaphone is in the ON position and quietly mutes your other audio applications. For example, it’ll stop your song if you have your iPod app running.

To control the volume you either use your iPhone volume settings or your amplified speaker settings. Overall this app has one handed control functionality and simple to use.

Features I’d like to see in future versions of the app include the following:

Volume control on the microphone

Voice changing options (robot, male, female, variable)

Recording options

Originally when I received Megaphone for review I had an older version installed. I then upgraded to 1.0.1 a couple of days later. The update explained it had improved performance – I’ve been in contact with the developers over the past 24 hours & they tell me they are constantly working on improvements.

Reading the reviews on iTunes for this app some users explained that they were confused in how to get the app to work as it doesn’t have much documentation other than the 4 slides that you can access at will by pressing the multicolored circle under the OFF/ON switch.

There really isn’t much to this app, it’s simple, effective and loads of fun. I had a small issue with the version on my iPhone & when I contacted the lads at Smudge Apps they were surprised I had a hiccup and were very keen to help look into what the issue is. (Sometimes Megaphone won’t recognise my iPhone Mic – seems isolated to my iPhone). Myself & Mr K worked with the guys from Smudge testing different scenarios – I was surprised how really friendly the guys there are (they are still looking into this).

At $1.99c it’s not going to break the bank, it’s fun & if you ever do need to use your iPhone as a microphone to throw your voice around a room – then Megaphone is what you need.

So, as you know I kinda bagged a bit on Apple Keynote Remote the other day. I wasn’t happy with it, and said it was next to useless.

Well I decided I’d try it again, only this time I had a big problem – the venue that I’d be presenting in didn’t have wifi. As we know Keynote Remote ONLY works over wifi (why it doesn’t support Bluetooth is … well … actually a reflection on the CRAP implementation of Bluetooth on the iPhone), so what to do.

Allow me to introduce Ad-Hoc Networking. Most computers are able to create a “just for now” network, meaning your computer can make a small wifi network around it.

To do this on the Mac, click on the wifi icon in top bar and click create network.

Create Network to start creating an Ad-Hoc wifi network

A new window will pop up asking you to name your network and select a channel – you probably won’t have to change anything here.

Set up Ad-Hoc network

If you wish you can select create password – I didn’t bother today. Click okay and wait a moment while the computer sets up your network – you’ll know it’s done by the wifi icon changing to a solid gray with an arrow. At this point your Ad-Hoc (or as the Mac calls it Computer-to-Computer) network is setup and running.

On your iPhone, flip on wifi, and you should now see your Ad-Hoc network (in my case Mr K Laptop) in the wifi list. Select this (enter password if you set that up) and return to the home screen. Launch Keynote Remote and Keynote 09 on your Mac. Your iPhone should now see Keynote on the Mac & you can launch your presentation.

I was able to present – and there was no wifi present

Summary

Last time I thought Keynote Remote was a bit of a joke – and I stand by that. Yes I managed to get it to work, but in a complicated way.

Flicking the screen to change slides, is still a bit hard to do – I found I had to keep looking at the iPhone & yes it can be to easy to skip a slide.

And yes I still think at $0.99 it’s too expensive – but now that I have it, I won’t delete it.

Oh and one more thing: this might have been because it was an Ad-Hoc network, but I noticed that the iPhone would (if you flipped through slides too fast) start polling the network & would do nothing until it finished – meaning I was caught at one stage waiting on the phone. Thankfully I’d finished and had raced back through the slides to address a question, so it wasn’t a big issue.

As many of you probably know by now I’ve been moaning about “Apple Remote” for a while saying it was next to useless in the real world and what Apple should have created was an Apple Keynote Remote.

Well they have, and it was announced at MacWorld yesterday – so I bought it and quickly set about testing it.

And I have to say, if the Apple Remote is useless, this Keynote Remote is next to useless & I really wanted to like it.

When I first fired it up, I received a message saying “No WiFi connection, you must have wifi to use Keynote Remote” – funny I thought, I’m on wifi – there are little wave signals at the top of the screen. Not a good start, and to be honest I didn’t get much better from there. I restarted the app and headed to the settings for Keynote Remote and created a link with Keynote (NOTE: this ONLY works with Keynote 09). This time I had WiFi and the connection was made.

Keynote Remote settings screen

I opened a Keynote slide show and then picked up my iPhone. Starting Keynote Remote I was prompted with a screen asking to Control Keynote – I clicked this button and the presentation started. I had set the settings to landscape so this is what I saw first up.

Now surprisingly the screen is actually big enough to see enough of the content on there to know what’s coming, which is great … however there are some flaws here. Below each screen there are the words Next & Current – I tried clicking Next .. nothing happened. I tried to click the slide, nothing happened, then it dawned on me I have to flick the slide right to left to get it to go to the next slide. Now I don’t know about you but I think it’s going to take a little bit for me to get used to that – clicking is a much easier action when you are presenting and being discreet about changing slides.

Keynote in Portrait mode

In portrait mode you can see the presenter notes on screen and can scroll through them by flicking, however you also have to flick to get your presentation to move forward or back.

Summary

Wont wake the wifi connection: I’ve found with my iPhone if I leave it sitting for a while it’ll switch off wifi to 3G until an app like Mail or Safari force it back to wifi (I wonder if this is a power saving feature?) Keynote Remote can’t make the iPhone rejoin Wifi – I have to close it, open mail and go back.

No extra data in landscape mode: there seems to be no way to get presenter data such as timings, and no way to skip forward or back X number of slides (eg: I want to skip the next slide)

Flicking left and right to change slides: not as discreet as clicking a button, and too easy to change 2 slides rather than one (that might be me, I tend to drop my thumb back on the iPhone which is read as a flick)

$0.99: it’s ridiculous for Apple to charge for this app, after all they don’t charge for Apple Remote – so why this?

Okay so it’s probably NOT next to useless, in fact it’s probably half decent, it just feels .. lacking. Then again how many other presenter remotes do you know that have a beautiful screen showing you what’s on screen & what’s up next?

There you go, my thoughts on the new Keynote Remote. You can get it from the App Store now for $0.99.

Sling Media announced at MacWorld their new player for the iPhone. This player has been long expected, however it’s taken Sling Media a while to get to this point. The announcement also included the Mac version – so if you own a Sling Media unit you can now stream (live?) tv direct to your iPhone.

It’ll be interesting to see if and when this gets into the iTunes App Store as Sling Media are yet to put the app in for review – still they have a booth right next to Apple at the Mac World conference so maybe they can have a word or two to someone?

I don’t watch that much TV, but it looks kinda cool – check out a demo video on Sling Media’s site: click here for demo video
