I just downloaded CubeCheater and let me tell you after watching the video I had my doubts

How could an iPhone app, help me solve the Rubiks Cube?

I, like I’m sure many people, have a box of Rubiks cubes that I play with now and then and every now and then I catch a glimmer of hope after trying a bunch of other solutions, including reading through page after page of instructions only to be disappointed. Not so with CubeCheater!

After downloading it from iTunes, the first thing you need to do is take photos of the 6 sides of your Rubiks Cube. The app will assist you as you take these shots, using the center square as the guide.

Once all sides are photographed. CubeCheater checks to make sure you don’t have more colors than others; if you do the app will give you a chance to eyeball, checking to see if the recognition failed and easily fix it by choosing a color on the palette and coloring a square the right color.

CubeCheater then sets about finding you a solution. There is a neat animation of a spinning cube to watch while it’s working it out. It doesn’t take long, just a few seconds and it’s done. My first one failed because I didn’t pay attention to which color was up in correlation to the facing color – doh! After my second attempt I figured it out and followed the 21 directions step by step and solved it in real life! It was really exciting to see how quickly CubeCheater can help you solve a Rubiks Cube without having to peel off the stickers or pry the squares apart (admit it – you’ve done it).

Aside from the standard features you can customize the color sets as well as the speed to where you follow to solve the cube. I found the default speed fine and only took a few seconds to adapt to to see the orientation for my Rubiks Cube and how to spin the cube.

Summary

This is certainly a fine App to have handy for parties as well as helping yourself learn how to solve a cube without having to rely on the CubeCheater.
