Google have finally come to the party with a solution that allows the syncing of data between your Google account and your iPhone.
According to the Google Blog this solution uses SyncML to give you full push capabilities for contacts & calendars.
Hmm, What the? Where’s the Push email?
There is one big issue with this, it will replace your iPhone’s current data set with that of your Google account – not something I’m keen to do as my Google account(s) are full of crap contacts due to the way Google manages contacts from email you reply too – just because I reply to someone doesn’t make them a CONTACT. Grr
Anyhoo, it’s about time we had full push support for calendars – I’m taking a look right now to see if I can have this functioning for JUST my calendar. UPDATE: yes you can have just your calendar setup to use this service.
Here’s a video from google:

Oh, and YES you can use this for domains using Google Apps – but your admin will need to enable it.
To set it up you will need to re-create your GMail accounts on your iPhone use the Microsoft Exchange option on the iPhone rather than the GMail option. This then gives you access to the Sync options. Learn more about setting up Google Sync on your iPhone here.
And sadly, once you enable syncing with Google Sync you can no longer sync this data over iTunes.
So is this going head to head with mobile me, if so I wonder how Apple feels.
Seems like Google Sync is nothing more than a licensed version of Exchange ActiveSync.
