iPhone 3.0 Roundup *updated*

Wow, the internet is ablaze with the fantastic news of what’s coming in iPhone 3.0 – of course Copy & Paste is high on everyone’s list of new features, but I’m more excited by full Bluetooth support for apps, hardware control and Google Maps.

I’ve been talking to some developers and they are all very excited by what 2.0 holds for them. Finally we can get Proximity based sync for apps like Things!

So, instead of simply reposting what everyone else has, here is a list of great links to the iPhone 3.0 news coverage:

There probably are tons more links – but these give a good overview of all the main points

  1. [...] Today Apple showed a sneak peak at what is coming in the iPhone 3.0 software updated (read iTalk Magazines list of iPhone 3.0 updates). [...]

  2. I think Keran you’re missing the big point here. Or rather – you’ve mentioned it without realizing that it’s the key to the “why I love my iPhone” question:

“I commented that I’d have a fully fledged Windows Mobile phone with many of these features and that I just didn’t really use them. I’ve never really missed them with the iPhone (aside from once or twice wanting to copy and paste a URL – and maybe wanting to send a pic of my daughter to my father via MMS once or twice -okay so I’ve missed some of them).”

What people are comparing is apples_to_apples or apples_to_oranges, but the comparisons are irrelevant. Feature lists make NO sense if the implementation of those features is so lame, useless, counter-intuitive or just plain frustrating that you won’t be using them anyway.

And that’s the key to Apple’s success and HTC’s failure. Apple chose to release iPhone with a OS that was not feature-complete but was a joy to use. HTC and others are releasing devices with many more features, but awkward to use. Which one of those two would you rather own?

You forgot to mention one piece of information – why does your friend actually HATE her HTC so much? Is it for the newly found lack of features? I’d hazard a guess here – it’s because using it is endlessly annoying.

And that’s why _I_ love my iPhone (first gen) even if the new OS update does not support all the new features on my phone (MMS and A2DP bluetooth in particular).

Once again a great comment Jakub. You are right a feature list is one thing … implementation is another all together. I agree Apple did the right thing releasing 1.0 as a polished, albeit a “smaller feature list” iPhone. That is do what you do and do it well – then when you can add more to that & still do it well, then add those things.

My friend hates her HTC because it’s annoying. The novelty factor of it’s 3D style interface, the requirement to use the stylish or something firm to interact with it, the smallness of the screen etc all got to her.
